Now, with its short vacation about over, Chevrolet is already testing the second-generation Colorado, which is already available in markets like South America, Asia and Australia. Before you get too confused, please note that the U.S.-spec model will look slightly different than the global model.
General Motors is re-entering the midsize pickup segment with the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and its corporate cousin, the GMC Canyon. GM ended its midsize pickup production last year, ceding the field to the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier (Ford ended U.S. production of its Ranger midsize pickup in 2011). Even before their end however, the Colorado and Canyon were saddled with inefficient powertrains and subpar interiors and never seriously contested the Tacoma’s supremacy in the segment.
Chevy hopes to start with a blank slate for its new midsize, and even considered renaming it. GM officials weighed whether the nameplate, which replaced the popular S-10, held enough equity in the U.S. after only one generation (although a long one, nearly a decade). But focus groups said they liked the Centennial State tribute and Chevrolet decided to keep the name.
Whether those potential buyers go for Chevy’s pivot to make the Colorado more of a lifestyle and sport-oriented truck, perhaps leaving the workhorse chores to the GMC version, is another story. Early photos of the 2015 Colorado reveal a midsize body bigger than the previous generation. With a large bisected grille and thick, chunky outlines, the new model appears under its camouflage wrap like a compressed version of the redesigned Silverado full-size pickup.

2015 Chevrolet Colorado Release
General Motors will roll out all-new midsize pickup trucks next year. The trucks will replace the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, which were recently canceled. The announcement ends much speculation on the future of midsize pickups in GM’s lineup.
While General Motors confirmed the trucks are coming back next year, the automaker didn’t even speculate on what they’ll be called. It’s unlikely that the trucks will carry the same Colorado and Canyon names as those of their predecessors. That’s because General Motors is targeting “different buyers” with the new models, according to Mark Reuss, GM’s president for North America.
At the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars today, General Motors Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann provided the first look at the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, designed to be capable, versatile and fuel-efficient alternatives to full-size pickups.
2015 Chevrolet Colorado Interior
Interior upgrades shouldn’t be too difficult, even incremental gains in materials quality would mark a vast improvement over the last model. We expect the Colorado to offer cabin quality on par with the Cruze compact sedan, along with the latest Chevy MyLink infotainment interface and smartphone integration, two elements that would give it an edge over the Frontier’s relatively plain interior.
2015 Chevrolet Colorado Exterior
Whatever the engine and transmission options, the Colorado will need to offer towing ability anywhere from 3,500 to 6,500 pounds (for V6 models) to compete with the Frontier and Tacoma. A four-wheel-drive option is also a must, and the Colorado will need to do better than the 25 mpg highway mileage of its predecessor.
2015 Chevrolet Colorado Engine
As for the engine lineup, rumors suggest we will see GM’s new 3.6-liter V-6 engine, a small 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine and the new 4.3-liter V-6 EcoTec3 engine. There are no rumors of a V-8 option, but the original Colorado did have one, starting in 2009, so it very well may get one at some point.
